Re: How Can we come up with 6 year payback? I just calculated a similar case for a client. We should first understand 3 different types of Geo systems. Pump and Dump ( I personally do not recommend this type though this is quite possibly the only way to prove a 6 year payback), next is the Horizontal. The final system would be Vertical (this is ussually the most expensive, but commonly the only option in areas with limited space). I had figured a normal 100,000 btu 92% forced air gas furnace with all the bells and whistles including A/C whole package on high end new home $50,000.00. The same same system with a 9 ton vertical loop Geo-thermal unit was $75,000.00. The Geo unit had a COP(coefficient of perfomance) of 3.5 which is about 350% efficient. To get the 9 tons of heating capabilities from the Geo H.P. we need about 9.041 KW @ .10/kw which is costing us about $0.904. To get the 100,000 btus from the gas furnace (LP) @ $1.50/gal we will be spending approx $1.80 (about twice as much). If we use simple math and determine it will cost us $2000.00 to heat this home with our gas furnace every year, we know we will be using approx. 112,359,550 btus to get this done. We need the same amount of btus to heat with our Geo system which will cost us about $940.00. These numbers show us a savings of $6360.00 over a 6 year period. Not quite equal to the $25,000.00 more we paid. So we also have to consider the savings in cooling, and the savings in domestic hot water with a desuper heater. I think if I would have requested a pump and dump system I could have easily shown a 6 year payback. I hope this helps someone.
